Music is a powerful force. It has been researched and documented that people on the autism spectrum very often have a high sensitivity to both sound and music. They have a much higher rate of perfect pitch and can often really tune in to the different emotions that are communicated through music. This piece represents a convergence of several really important things in my creative life: autism, music, and visual art. It was created as a visual representation of my 9th Symphonic Picture subtitled "Interoseption" and appears on the title page. Interoception refers to the often unknown eighth sense (yes, there are actually eight, something I was very excited to discover!) that has to do with our interior sensations and feelings. Interoception tells us when we're hungry, when we're sleepy as well as how we experience our emotions. Music is a very effective way to reach people on the ASD spectrum to help them tune in to their own interior feelings, body awareness, and emotions. It also can help nurture communication and language among other important skills. I drew the foundation for this piece while listening to my Symphonic Picture No. 9 and responding to it, then I further developed the colors and shapes to bring about the final piece.
