Description
The autism spectrum disorder affects both children and adults throughout the world. It is a sensory processing disorder that is not fully understood. It affects every person differently which is why it’s called a “spectrum.” My daughter is affected by it and I’ve been learning so much, not only about ASD but also about new ways to see and experience the world! One thing I have learned is that it’s very important to be in tune with the sensory needs of the individual affected by ASD. As a parent, caretaker, or friend, it’s necessary to ask questions like, “Does this person need more sensory input or less at this time?” Here I’ve created a very visually-stimulating abstract image for the times when we need this kind of input. I’ve used colored circles and have thoughtfully connected some and created a bridge from one side of the image to the other. This is how I’ve noticed my own mind often functions, trying to connect thoughts, ideas and experiences and bridging from present to the future. It can sometimes be overwhelming for a person with sensory processing challenges, but often they are also given incredible gifts. It is up to educators to nurture these strengths and see the beautiful picture each person is. I believe that the more we can understand ASD and sensory processing, the more we will be able to enter the worlds of those affected and have meaningful interactions with them while at the same time have compassion, acceptance, and appreciation for them. I hope this piece raises more autism awareness and helps families.
