Description
I prepped for this painting by mixing blue, white, yellow, and red paints separately and then pouring them one by one into a single cup. I then placed a canvas on top of the cup, turned the whole thing over, and quickly lifted the cup as the paint flowed and spilled out. Once the paint had settled a bit I was excited to see the marbling and small paint cells, but was missing the red. It was all hidden behind blue and white with a touch of yellow. I was hoping to get a lot of colors, but not wanting to over mix the paint, I put some fluid white around and left the canvas in the sun to dry. To my astonishment and pleasure the sun baked the icy blue and white, causing cracks to form as the dried paint shrunk to reveal the brilliant red underneath! This looks so much like magma coming to the surface of the earth, hence the name “Lava And Ice Abstract.”

Thank you, Hazel! I love this kind of painting. Figuring out that the sun makes this texture was a pleasant surprise!
