Description
This is one of the most important paintings I’ve ever done because it was requested by my father. He and my brother did a lot of backpacking together with the Scouts and this was one of the places they saw. It’s Convict Lake in Mono County. It has a turbulent history including a real shootout between a group of convicts who escaped from a nearby prison and law enforcement. That’s where it gets it’s name. This is also the largest canvas painting I’ve ever done by far being something like 2’ by 3’. When my dad told me what he wanted I said, “But I can’t get a canvas that size!” And he said, “Is that the only thing stopping you? I’ll get you a canvas.” We’ll guess what showed up at their next visit! But it’s taken me about two years to feel it was the right time to do this. I painted it over the course of three days during precious time when my kids were having rest time. This lake is another example of the beauty and precious nature of so many wild places found in California and throughout the US, places that deserve respect, conservation and our appreciation. It’s my joy to have painted this.
You can watch me paint this from start to finish in this time-lapse video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/9hGNRQ_HO1o.

Sorry for your loss, Danielle! You have unwittingly captured a stunningly beautiful scene, which will be typical of the place to which they have gone, except that there it will just be average rather than exceptional. There is nothing in this world, which is not much, much better and more beautiful than in the next.
