Wow! The very first art show I entered as a little girl was at this arboretum. I won at the age of 9 years old and one of the awards given to me was of a large bunch of Peacock feathers. Your painting is beautifully done. Thanks for the wonderful memory, Danielle. f/l

Artist's Description

A multitude of these birds make their home at the Los Angeles Arboretum. During the spring their loud cries can be heard coming from all directions! My challenge here was to portray a gorgeous bird without making him look too beautiful to be true...I wanted to capture his “birdy” qualities if that makes sense. Here he’s pecking in the dried leaves of the prehistoric jungle garden. I made the underdrawing from life as he was unintimidated by my observation.

I come from a family of creative people and am grateful to my parents for cultivating my creativity which is now part of my daily life. I am a classically-trained musician and violinist with a doctorate in violin performance and until recently was the director and conductor of the La Verne Symphony Orchestra which I am happy to say still flourishes in that city. At the moment I've left the stage in order to raise our two little babies. Being a mom is what I do now. And the challenge is weaving creativity into this new life.
