Description
These are amazing creatures, the blue morpho butterflies of the American rainforests. When their wings are closed, they look like dried leaves, but when they open their wings one can see a brilliant metallic blue. When I was a child and a teenager, I had an absolute obsession with butterflies of all kinds. I wanted to become an entomologist and learned all I could about butterflies and other insects. Now my little daughter is showing the same fascination. Her favorite toy is a little cardboard monarch that I brought back from Mexico as a teenager. I painted these butterflies because of her. People on the spectrum often have very specific and intense interests. Sometimes these interests can be unusual, but many scientists, artists, and other creative people are on the spectrum and have channeled their interests for the good of themselves and others. Now that I finally understand my butterfly "obsession" I embrace it and accept it while allowing myself to explore other interests as well. This picture was a joy to pain as it was part of a journey of self discovery that connects me to my daughter in a very special way.
The green feather on the bottom right is a real feather from an Amazon parrot.
