Artist's Description

Every fall and winter the once glorious male peacocks go drab and stroll around with short, stubbly tails. But if you look closely in early autumn, you can already see the mostly green new plumage poking out from under their fluffy grey backs. These short green tuffs are the tops of the glorious eye feathers for which the peacock is famous. They're there already, they're just hidden for the most part, still beneath his skin. It must be incredibly uncomfortable, I would think, to grow these huge quills out of the skin, but this bird didn't seem to mind. He went on calmly eating his breakfast of grubs as I took this shot.
