Description
Neurodiversity has become one of my favorite concepts. Ever since my daughter was diagnosed on the autism spectrum, a whole new world of awareness has opened up for me and my family, about autism, about how every person is diverse neurologically speaking, and how much work there is to be done in terms of education and helping others understand about people who may be different than others. They say, “If you know one person with autism, you know one person with autism.” That’s because the spectrum is so wide and each individual experiences challenges and strengths differently. Neurodiversity is a concept that includes all of us. My family is very neurodiversity. There’s my daughter and me. I have learning challenges due to dyslexia and can relate to a lot of the sensory processing issues and strengths my daughter has. Then there are my husband and my little son, both neurotypical. Neurodiversity is not something to ignore, but something to celebrate!
This piece was created by using a cutout of the infinity symbol, the international symbol for neurodiversity. I applied layers of paint, pastels and pencil over and around this cutout and splashed some matte finish to give more texture. I employed some almost empty paint tubes to spray put colors and make the splatter textures. The bumpy shapes you see were created from a mold I made of some fake peas my kids had in their plastic toy food. I made molds and then filled them with acrylic paint. All in all this was a Very fun work to create.

What a wonderful assimilation and expression of your experience of neurodiversity! I learned so much from your description too. Art is truly the transmutation of our experiences into beauty with which we can share and inspire!

Thank you so much, Judy! Yes, you really get it! I feel that’s what art is all about!
