Description
This is a depiction of Jesus when He would get away from the crowds and go up the mountain to pray to His Father. The world can be such a noisy and confusing place at times, but Jesus showed what to do, to rest in the presence of the Father and take all concerns to Him.
This is a very helpful image for teaching about and meditating on the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Here, Jesus and the Father are both painted in the same blue paint. We say of Jesus in the Creed that He is, “consubstantial with the Father,” that is of the same substance. They are two distinct Persons, but of the same substance. The Holy Spirit is the Third Person of the Trinity. He is so mysterious that I didn’t want to directly paint Him here, but we can imagine Him in a number of ways, perhaps as the entire composition of the Father and Son together to make a third whole. Another way I like to think of Him is the Spirit of Life that is in you the viewer as you look at this image. The Holy Spirit, again quoting from the Creed, is, “the Lord, the Giver of life Who proceeds from the Father and the Son.”
The bright colors and patterns you see here were inspired by the beautiful geometric paintings to be found on so many indigenous African dwellings. I also took inspiration from Gaudi’s Holy Family Cathedral in Barcelona (mainly the spirit of it). As I painted this I felt perfectly at peace. My prayer is that viewers may gain peace by meditating on this scene.
